5 Ways To Recognize True And False Friends

5 Ways To Recognize True And False Friends

People come into and leave our lives for a myriad of reasons.  Some will become lifelong friends while others will remain acquaintances.  Some will just be “work buddies,” while others will be your friend outside of work as well.  Some will improve our life for the better and others will leave us feeling hurt and betrayed.
It can sometimes be difficult to spot a real friend from a toxic one until it’s too late, and you wind up having a horrible experience.  So, how can you tell the difference sooner rather than later?  Below are 5 ways to tell the difference between a true friend and a toxic one.

1. They keep in touch

Fake friends will only call you when they need, or want, something.  Real friends will contact you wherever and whenever because they are actually interested in what’s going on in your life.  They call to tell you a funny story that just happened or share an exciting experience.
They call because they just want to hear your voice.  If you only hear from someone when they want something from you, it’s a sure sign that they aren’t a true friend and are just using you.

2. They keep your secrets

A true friend would never betray you by telling someone your secrets.  Fake friends will treat your secrets like it’s nothing sacred.  Right after they promise you they won’t tell a soul, they’ll be telling everyone they know.  A real friend values your confidence, and will not tell anyone a secret you’ve trusted them with.

3. They make time for you

It doesn’t matter if they only have an hour between work and their yoga class, a real friend will talk to you whenever you call.
Even if it’s been a hectic day, a true friend let you come over for a drink if they need to talk.  They love you and want to spend time with you.  So, they will make time for you no matter how busy their life is.

4. You don’t have to impress them

It doesn’t matter if your house is a mess or you are a mess.  You know you can be your true self with a real friend.  If you have to clean your house, put on nice clothes and be in full makeup to avoid nasty remarks or looks of disapproval, then that person is not a true friend.

5. They always support you

A real best friend will encourage you with anything that you try! Whether it’s deciding to take an art class when they know you have no artistic abilities, or changing your career path, a real friend will be there every step of the way.
And, if you fail, a true friend will be the first person there to help build you back up.
